water rescue

ISLA VISTA, Calif. - Santa Barbara County Fire and Sheriff's deputies were called to reports of a person who fell from a balcony in Isla Vista Thursday night.

Students nearby noticed a man in the water. Good Samaritans jumped in to save the 18-year-old before emergency crews arrived.

It was reported near an apartment on the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive around 11:19 p.m.

The man fell about 70 feet into the ocean below, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.

The man was alert and talking to authorities.

He was taken by paramedics to Cottage Hospital with "significant injuries", Bertucelli said.

Officials said they did not need to use a rope system because those nearby were able to easily get down to the water.
