Assemblyman Cunningham introduces bill to support relocated military families

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - California Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham introduced a new bipartisan bill that aims to make relocation easier and more affordable for members of the military and their family.

The bill would effectively waive re-licensure fees for spouses of active-duty military.

Cunningham said on average, military families move every two-and-a-half years which can be costly for spouses who hold state-specific licenses.

AB 2631 would waive re-licensure fees for spouses of active-duty military if the spouse held a similar license in another state and was relocated by the military.

Cunningham said this bill is inspired by service members and families at Vandenberg Air Force Base, which is located within the 35th Assembly District.

“Members of the military and their families make incredible sacrifices to serve their country,” said Cunningham. “With this piece of legislation, we can make their lives a little easier and little more affordable. Waiving these types of fees for the husbands and wives who follow their active-duty spouses around the country is the right thing to do.”

In 2014, the Legislature passed a similar bill (AB 186) unanimously, which expedited the re-licensing process for military spouses.

AB 2631 is coauthored by Assemblymember Vince Fong, Assemblymember Tasha Boerner-Horvath, Assemblymember Tom Lackey, Assemblymember Chad Mayes, Senator Scott Wilk, and Senator Brian Jones.
