Solvang City Council to continue discussions on proposed developments

SOLVANG, Calif. - The Solvang City Council has decided to continue talks regarding a controversial development site which would replace the Veterans Memorial Hall with a European-style plaza.

Protesters gathered outside the council chambers before the meeting on Tuesday night, with around 80 people outside opposing the development.

No specific decisions, actions, or approvals were made during the Tuesday meeting, in reference to moving forward in the process. Because of the outpouring of public comment, the topic will be further discussed including public input, before it can move forward.

The proposed mixed-use development would include hotel, commercial, residential, and administration and community use. The hotel would include 112 guest rooms, the commercial area would be anywhere between 36,500-49,500 square feet, and the residential use would have 105-181 units.

An administration and community building will be added, currently, it would stand at three stories, taking up between 15,000-19,000 square feet. The city of Solvang is looking at using this building for administrative work.

As the project moves along in the process, the developers are expecting the layout of the project to change. The architecture is currently being modeled after Danish buildings in Europe, to continue the theme in the city.
