SANTA BARBARA, Calif. —   The Bishop Diego girls volleyball team swept top-seeded Capistrano Valley to capture the CIF-SS Division 7 championship on Saturday night at the Brick House gym.

The three-set sweep scores were 25-12, 25-18 and 25-20.

This ended a long title drought for the Cardinals, who last won a CIF title in 1979.

The three Urzua sisters — Alina, Siena and Eliana — led the way with a complete championship performance while combing for 33 kills and 45 digs.

After hoisting the championship trophy, senior captain Alina Urzua talked about winning with her two sisters.

“My sisters have talked about this since we were younger, hopefully getting the three Urzua names on the wall, ” she said. “To finally get it, it’s just amazing.”

Throughout its five postseason matches, Bishop never dropped a single set en route to the title.

The Cardinals will continue postseason play in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday night.
