Planned burnings underway at Hearst San Simeon State Park

KEYT

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - Prescribed burns are set to take place at Hearst San Simeon State Park near Cambria this week.

The burnings are scheduled to begin Tuesday, June 8, and end Friday, June 11. They will take place in the Monterey pine forest near the intersection of Highway 1 and Moonstone Beach Drive.

California State Parks said the fires will start as early as 7 a.m. and end by 5 p.m.

The purpose of these prescribed burnings is to reduce the amount of fire fuel and hazards in the area, often involving dead and dried up trees.

State Parks is working with the Air Pollution Control District and CAL FIRE to ensure these burns are safe and don't negatively impact the surrounding community.

They said burn days may change based on weather conditions and permit conditions.
