SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Crews from across San Luis Obispo County responded to a vegetation fire that broke out in the City of San Luis Obispo Sunday afternoon.

The fire was reported around 4:10 p.m. off the 200 block of Bridge Street.

Around 4:20 p.m., SLO City Fire said a structure was potentially threatened by the 50-by-50-foot burn.

By 6:10 p.m., City Fire said the burn was about 50 acres in size. No structures were damaged or destroyed and forward progress was reportedly stopped.

Firefighters continue to aggressively attack the fire and establish control lines.

City Fire announced evacuations for the areas East of Higuera Street, South of Bridge Street, North of Arezzo Drive and West of Stoneridge Trail. Evacuation warnings are in place for all areas within a quarter-mile of the above area.

Evacuees may go to the Marigold Shopping Center on Broad Street and Tank Farm Road until evacuations have been lifted. A city bus with air conditioning is also available at the shopping center to provide evacuees with some relief from the high temperatures.

By just after 7 p.m., firefighters said they were securing the control lines they laid around the perimeter of the fire so that the evacuations could be lifted.

CAL FIRE, Atascadero Fire, State Hospital Fire, Five Cities Fire, and Templeton firefighters all sent crews to assist with the battle.

Firefighters and their equipment will remain in the area overnight to ensure the fire does not flare up again.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
