Santa Yenz Valley celebrates SYVUHS Class of 2020 with graduation parade
SOLVANG, Calif -- Pirate pride hit the streets of the Santa Ynez Valley Friday. Santa Ynez Valley Union High School hosted a parade for its graduates.
Horns could be heard throughout Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley Friday. It wasn't a traffic jam, instead a celebration for the Class of 2020.
Sean O’Neill is an SYVUHS graduate and road in his car with his brother, mom and dog. “It’s incredible," said O'Neill. "I mean it’s a bummer not having a real, real graduation, but I would say this is better.”
Terra Da Foe is another SYVUHS graduate celebrating with her family. “It feels incredible, unreal," said Da Foe. "I’m very excited, ecstatic, and just looking forward to everything that’s coming.”
Friends, family and teachers lined the streets with signs, balloons and pirate flags for the school mascot.
Julie Quinney is a former third grade teacher. She watched the parade from the sidewalk and said, “It’s been so fun remembering my third grade class, and to see them nine years later as seniors and graduates it’s been really a blessing.”
Graduates waved from sunroofs, others drove with their families. They decorated their cars and made it clear where they're headed next.
“I’m going to Pepperdine next year," said O'Neill. "Hopefully to study a business degree.”
The parade took the graduates all around their community. It replaced a traditional graduation ceremony, allowing everyone to celebrate while maintaining a safe distance. And the graduates loved it.
“We got a lot of extra activities," said Da Foe. "So it’s really nice that they went out of their way and so many people are acknowledging us and showing us love and support. I really admire, the parade is incredible.”
