SANTA MARIA, Calif. - While working at a restaurant can get messy, Dominic Larocco with Cugini’s says lately there’s less trash to take out since the Coronavirus pandemic. "The trash is gone down there has been less trash in the restaurants. We would take out like everyday. And now it’s probably two or three days."

Since the stay at home order Shad Springer with the Santa Maria Utilities Department says there is a drop in revenue due to less trash services needed at restaurants. "Many of the restaurants we see in the past have had trash service up to five times per week. What We’re seeing now is that’s been reduced to three times a week or maybe only even once a week."

This means there’s a significant reduction in revenue because the department charges based on the amount of service provided to the site.

While workers here at Cugini's is pleased about having less trash to take out, the utilities department is closely monitoring revenue changes.

The utilities department is anticipating about $35,000 per month in reduced revenue due to these changes.

"Worst case scenario what it would lead to is an increase potentially in rates for the trash collection service that we provide," said Springer.

While the stay at home order continues Springer says the utilities department hopes to keep providing the essential services in our the community. "The sewer the garbage. Very important to the community right now so that they can continue to shelter in place and be at home."
