OXNARD, Calif. - Oxnard police were involved in a standoff in front of a home on the corner of South Driskill Street and La Puerta Avenue on Monday.

Police said an altercation took place between three roommates around 9 a.m. inside a residence on the 1800 block of La Puerta Avenue.

Officers said they were warned that a suspect, who is currently on CDC parole for bank robbery, was armed with a knife and was attempting to stab his two roommates.

When police arrived at the scene around 9:20 a.m., they said they heard the fight taking place inside the house. Officers tried to make contact with the residents but were unsuccessful. Due to the danger inside, police decided to force entry into the home where they found the suspect armed with a metal pipe.

The armed man reportedly charged at officers who used a less-than-lethal device in an attempt to stop him.

Fortunately, the device caused the man to stop charging. He instead retreated further into the house.

Officers then turned their attention to the victims and helped them out of the residence. One victim was reportedly transported to the hospital for a head injury. The second victim suffered only minor injuries.

SWAT, Crisis Negotiation and investigators with the Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene with a search warrant in an attempt to get the suspect to peacefully surrender.

Police tried to speak with the suspect to convince him to exit the house, but the suspect remained barricaded inside. Officers reportedly contacted the suspect's brother in an attempt to get him to surrender, but the suspect refused.

That's when officers decided to enter the home with K9 units and located the suspect.

Police said, during his arrest, the suspect assaulted Oxnard police dog Leo with the metal pipe. Fortunately, Leo is doing well and does not have any visible injuries. Oxnard police shared the following update picture saying, "[Leo is] currently playing happily in his back yard."

The suspect was booked into Ventura County jail on his outstanding warrant and this incident. He was additionally charged for assaulting a police dog.

The surrounding residential streets were blocked by police during the course of this incident.
