Santa Barbara police apprehend attempted murder suspect with help of police dog

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- A Santa Barbara police officer and his police dog apprehended an attempted murder suspect on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Santa Barbara police responded to reports of a stabbing that happened on the 200 block of South Milpas Street in Santa Barbara.

The victim was transported to Cottage Hospital where he was stabilized by hospital staff.

In their investigation, police identified the suspect as Anthony Cuevas, 45, from Santa Barbara.

On Thursday night around 9:30 p.m., detectives located Cuevas on the 1200 block of Punta Gorda Street in Santa Barbara.

Cuevas left the area on a bike.

Police Officer Signorelli and his police dog Murdoch chased after Cuevas. Officer Signorelli ordered Cuevas to stop while police dog Murdoch ran closely behind his partner. Cuevas immediately surrendered without incident.

Police were able to recover a knife they believed to be used in the stabbing incident. It was buried in the ground at a nearby location.

Cuevas was booked for attempted homicide and assault with a deadly weapon.
