San Francisco taps Asian American lawmaker for city attorney

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco’s mayor named state Assemblymember David Chiu to the post of city attorney on Wednesday. He replaces Dennis Herrera, who was nominated by Mayor London Breed to lead the city’s water, power and sewer department. The changes were made possible by a widening public corruption scandal that’s engulfed the city of nearly 900,000 people. Chiu is the first Asian American to hold the post and will need to run for election in June 2022 to keep the job. Chiu is a former civil rights attorney, prosecutor and San Francisco supervisor. A special election will be held to fill his Assembly seat.
