Man arrested on suspicion of lighting Goleta house on fire

GOLETA, Calif. - A man was taken into custody by sheriff's deputies Tuesday morning after a house caught fire in Goleta.

The sheriff's office said a 43-year-old Goleta man was taken into custody after the fire broke out at a home on the the 100 block of Salisbury Avenue.

The two-alarm fire started around 4:30 a.m and gunfire was reported prior to the fire. Sheriff's deputies assisted the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office with the response.

Firefighters worked to knock down the fire which engulfed the entire home.

Neighbors near the home called 911 to report that a man had tried to force his way into homes. Eventually deputies located the man on the 7700 block of Jenna Drive and he was taken into custody.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies contacted the man the previous evening after he was reported to be exhibiting strange behavior.

The man was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered before his arrest.

A woman who was in the home at the time the fire broke out was transported to the hospital for burn injuries. She is expected to recover, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said the man is believed to have started the fire intentionally. The home is being treated as a crime scene.

The man faces possible charges for vandalism, burglary, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and arson of an inhabited dwelling.
