PORT HUENEME, Calif. - At a time when supplies like toilet paper can be hard to find, it's also become a target for some thieves in Port Hueneme.

Officers recently arrested three people on probation who were caught with  31 rolls of stolen toilet paper, 27 tissue boxes in addition to towels of various sizes and bed sheets, according to the Port Hueneme Police Department.

The items were allegedly taken from a maid's cart at a local hotel in Port Hueneme.

On Monday, an officer near the Port City Plaza shopping center on the 800 Block of North Ventura Road noticed an open alcoholic container on the dashboard of a vehicle in the parking lot.

The police department said the officer found that all of the people in the vehicle were on probation allowing searches.

The three people who arrested and charged with petty theft are Jessica Perez, 25, of Oxnard, Stephen Talley, Jr., 25, of Port Hueneme and Tyson Castillo, 32, of Oxnard.

They were on active probation with search terms related to theft and not to posses stolen property.

The Police Department wrote on their Facebook page that the theft "should make you flush with anger" and "we need to stop this lawlessness which is bubbling up from the bowels of our criminal underground".

"We’re aware that this isn’t the crime of the century, but it’s a solid #2. While we are trying to protect our public from price gouging and hoarding, it stinks that we have criminals trying to steal precious supplies from our local hotels. These thieves would have inevitably attempted to sell these items on the toiletry-market."
