Surfers hit the waves at 38th annual Rincon Classic

CARPINTERIA, Calif. -- Over 200 surfers were hanging ten to see who were the kings and queens of the beach. The 38th annual Rincon Classic surf competition was held Saturday and Sunday in Carpinteria.

Local surfer Adam Brown said when he surfs Rincon they call him, "The Champ." And he’ll get to keep that nickname for another year. He won the "Legends" 55-and-over division in his 20th year surfing the Rincon Classic.

“I love coming out here and seeing all these people at the beach," said Brown. "It’s a great vibe. Normally out here there’s so many people out here that you can’t get a wave. Seeing it like it is now, with just a few people out, it’s really incredible.”

Surfing fans and girls on the beach came to support their family and friends and also got to see the future of the sport.

Claudia Yoast came to support her family friends. She said, “It’s really fun to see the next generation come. The 10-year-olds walking by with their little wetsuits and surfboards because we’ve grown up here all of our friends surfed her uncle surfs and now there’s a whole new generation, it’s really cool to see.”

One of those surfer girls who is a rising star, Vela Mattive, took second at age 12 competing in the 17-and-under category.

“Just to perform in front of my local crowd and have fun," said Mattive. "And get Rincon with nobody out."

While they may be having fun fun fun on the beach, on the wave it was all about winning.

“I was just like don’t fall, I have to make this," remembered Mattive. "I just really wanted to get a good wave so that I was in first. And then I could get ahead of everybody.”
