Hundreds celebrate Day of the Dead in Santa Barbara

Day of the Dead is a celebration that goes back some 3,000 years when families welcome the souls of loved ones who have died.

Hundreds of students from Adelante Charter School participated in the celebration throughout the weekend at Pershing Park.

“I’m excited because we celebrate our family members who passed away. We get to share our memories here and just remember how it was with them,” said participant Kelni Garcidumo.

According to tradition, the gates of heaven are opened on October 31.

The spirits of children can rejoin their families for one day.

The spirits of the adults can do the same on November 2.

“My favorite part is spending time dancing and singing and having a good time,” said participant Duncan Cervantes.

In addition to performances put on by students from Adelante Charter School, many enjoyed all the lively imagery associated with Day of the Dead, like sugar skulls.

Many got their faces painted as a way to honor their loved ones who passed away.

While families and friends gathered to remember those who have died, Danna Bustellos said it is not a day of sadness, “My favorite part is that we are celebrating people that passed away. It’s like how we celebrate our birthdays.”
