UCSB settles for tie with #1 Stanford after Cardinal score late goal

UCSB was five minutes away from upsetting top-ranked Stanford but the Gauchos allowed a late goal and they tie the Cardinal 3-3 at Harder Stadium.

Charlie Wehan scored in the 85th minute for the equalizer for Stanford who erased deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to gain the tie.

The Gauchos Rodney Michael scored on a blast from 23 yards out in the 63rd minute to put UCSB up 3-2, it was Michael’s first goal of the season.

UCSB dominated most of the first half as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 15th minute by Finn Ballard McBride and in the 20th minute by Will Baynham.

But Stanford scored just before half as Arda Ballut tallied a goal in the 43rd minute.

Minutes into the second half, Stanford tied it up at 2 on Keegan Hughes’ goal in the 48th minute.

In the first overtime UCSB defender Faouzi Taieb suffered a serious leg injury and the senior left the stadium by ambulance.

UCSB is now 6-2-1 on the season.
