Rural Paso Robles man to be charged in stabbing death of pregnant woman

A rural Paso Robles man who stole a CHP patrol car and led authorities on a vehicle pursuit across northern San Luis Obispo County is also accused of committing a double homicide.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office says 31 year old Daniel Raul Rodriguez Johnson stabbed his pregnant girlfriend to death hours before he stole the CHP patrol car early Sunday morning.

The victim is identified as 27 year old Carrington Jane Broussard who was nine months pregnant with what would have been her third child together with Johnson.

“Both Broussard and her baby are deceased, preliminary evidence suggests the victim was stabbed multiple times”, said San Luis Obispo County Undersheriff Jim Voge at a Monday afternoon press briefing update into what was initially called a suspicious death investigation, “It was determined that Broussard and Johnson had a relationship for approximately six years, they have two daughters, they’ve been placed with relatives for the time being, we do not have any information to a possible motive.”

The Sheriff’s Office says Broussard’s body was discovered by deputies Sunday after the vehicle pursuit inside the home she shared with Daniel Johnson on the 2800 block of Sorrel Lane in the Heritage Ranch community near Lake Nacimiento.

Broussard and Johnson’s two young daughters, ages four and two, were with Johnson early Sunday morning when he abandoned a car they were riding in on York Mountain Road, east of Shadow Canyon Road, near Highway 46 West.

That’s where the CHP and an ambulance initially responded where they found the two young girls sitting in the car unharmed.

It’s also the location where Johnson managed to jump into the CHP patrol car on scene and take off.

The subsequent vehicle pursuit by other CHP officers and County Sheriff’s deputies ended on Highway 1 north of San Simeon after Johnson drove over a spike strip and was eventually taken into custody.

Undersheriff Voge says the Sheriff’s Office will request two additional charges of homicide be filed with the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office against Daniel Johnson who’s being held in county jail on several other charges related to the vehicle pursuit including felony auto theft, felony reckless driving, driving under the influence of a controlled substance and willful cruelty to a child with the possibility of injury or death.
