Cal Poly Rose Parade float wins awards

Cal Poly universities’ float once again won an award at the Rose Parade.

Students from Cal Poly and California State Polytechnic University Pomona received the “Extraordinaire Award” for the most extraordinary float.

This the first time they were given the honor.

The schools have made 71 appearances in the Rose Parade, that’s the sixth most of any organization in the event’s history.

They also earned the “California Grown” designation because at least 90% of the flowers on the float were from the Golden State.

Some of the plants were even grown at Cal Poly.

The float was designed and built by students.

This year’s parade theme was “The Melody of Life”.

The float, called “Far Out Frequencies”, payed homage to music as a language for all by showing astronauts communicating with aliens through instruments.

It featured 7,000 roses, 7,200 gerbera daisies, 3,200 irises and 200 red cabbages and more flowers.

Rose Parade officials say 700,000 people saw the float in person, and another 44 million Americans watched on TV.
