Santa Maria steps up fireworks enforcement as Fourth of July approaches

Santa Maria has a warning for anyone that might be thinking about using fireworks in an illegal manner.

“People who will choose to flaunt (rules), there is a penalty for that if you are caught,” said Mark van de Kamp.

The Santa Maria public information officer has helped lead a public awareness education effort that has been seen throughout the community.

“Our campaign has been very aggressive,” said van de Kamp. “It’s widespread. There’s really no reason not to know what the rules are.”

The campaign kicked off several weeks ago and included important fireworks information that was disseminated on several media outlets and on various displays.

“We put out a public service announcements on radio, every single movie at all the theaters in Santa Maria,” said van de Kamp. “We have utility bill inserts, newspaper ads. We also have posters up and road signs.”

As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, both Santa Maria police and fire departments have been stepping up efforts to curtail people from using fireworks illegally.

“We have received calls for service regarding fireworks, illegal fireworks, things of that nature,” said Santa Maria Police Department Lt. Jesse Silva. “We’re sending officers out if the reporting party requests.”

Silva said the department has received about 100 calls so far regarding fireworks.

“Most of the time it’s pretty hard for us to determine where the fireworks are coming from when the officers get there, but we’re doing the best that we can,” said Silva. “To date, there has not been any illegal fireworks confiscated, nor has there been any citations issued.”

During the holiday, police will have an increased presence to make sure everyone is following the rules.

“There is going to be several extra officers out on patrol and hopefully we don’t have any issues, but the officers will there to respond if need be,” said Silva.

In addition to extra police officers on the streets, the Santa Maria Fire Department will also have patrol prevention officers working on the Fourth of July as well.

According to a city release, the Fire Chief and Fire Marshall have recently patrolled neighborhoods in an effort to catch people who might be involved in illegal fireworks activity.

The use of illegal fireworks in Santa Maria is strictly prohibited. Any device that is launched into the air is considered illegal.

Only fireworks bought from neighborhood stands that are designated “safe and sane,” are allowed in the city.

Safe and sane fireworks can only be used on July 4, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Anyone who is caught lighting fireworks outside the designated time period faces a fine of $1,000.

People who have concerns or wish to report on illegal firework use can call a hotline the city has established.

The fireworks hotline is (805) 925-0951 ext. 3473 (FIRE)
