Santa Barbara gears up for the Fourth of July

The City of Santa Barbara is gearing up for this week’s Fourth of July celebration.

People passing by West Beach along Cabrillo Boulevard Monday can see the orange fencing and “Danger Fireworks/No Trespassing” signs posted in the sand.

Down toward the water, large sand berms mark the area where the professional fireworks will go off.

“Please come down and enjoy yourself,” said Anthony Wagner, Santa Barbara Police Department (SBPD) spokesman. “We will be on alert to ensure your safety. There will be more than 100 officers and police personnel patrolling the area.”

Wagner said more than 60,000 people are expected to gather along Santa Barbara’s waterfront Wednesday. He said SBPD is ramping up safety measures, including the mobilization of seven specialized teams: DUI Enforcement, Night Life Enforcement, Booking and Transport Team, Mobile Response Team, Foot Patrol for Cabrillo Boulevard and Parade Patrol.

“Three things: Don’t bring your fireworks. Don’t bring your dog. And don’t bring your alcohol,” Wagner said. “There is a zero tolerance for alcohol and absolutely a zero tolerance for fireworks.”

The City of Santa Barbara put together a sign listing Beach and Park Regulations: NO alcohol, NO Fireworks, NO pit digging, NO open fires, NO glass, Smoke-free City, NO dogs on the beach (keep pets safe and secure indoors during Four of July fireworks) NO parking near tracks (Cars will be towed!).

Wagner said people who break the law can expect fines in excess of $100 per infraction.

Cabrillo Boulevard will close to traffic at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday night; the fireworks show starts at 9:00 p.m.

Earlier in the day, streets will begin closing in the Downtown area at 9:30 a.m. for the afternoon parade. The Stearns Wharf Merchants Association Live Music and Fun will help kick off the festivities, starting at 11:00 a.m.

Hours later, the 55th Annual 4th of July Parade will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Micheltorena Street proceeding down State Street and concluding at Cota Street.
