Smoke from an elevator shaft forces building evacuation
A downtown Santa Barbara Medical building was evacuated when smoke began coming out of an elevator shaft.
Santa Barbara City Firefighters arrived at 1532 Anacapa St. and Arrellaga about 10:45 a.m. They found many of the people who were inside had come outside. They cleared the building and tracked the smoke to the elevator equipment.
“It was below grade kind of like a small cellar basement almost a confined space like about a ten by ten space. We used our monitoring equipment our thermal imaging equipment to make sure the heat was dissipating and the smoke was was being blown out,” said Captain Michael Hoose.
Power was shut off to the elevator until a crew from Republic elevator could come to the scene.
The cause is under investigation. No one was hurt.
