Theft of Lompoc High School baseball equipment

The Lompoc High School baseball team was thrown a curve this week when new equipment it just purchased was stolen from the equipment shed and concession stand behind the varsity diamond.

Batting practice Wednesday afternoon was thrown by hand instead of a new pitching machine the team just purchased.

“Monday we had a game, Monday night after the game somebody broke into our shed and stole a lot of the new things we had just gotten”, said Braves varsity head coach Brian Aguilar.

In addition to the new pitching machine, new catcher’s gear, concession candy and other items were stolen as well.

“The catcher’s gear and the pitching machine especially, that’s over two thousand dollars right there”, Aguilar said.

The Lompoc High varsity baseball team was counting on using the new pitching machine to help it prepare for the second half of the season and a stretch run toward a league title and CIF Playoff berth.

“We don’t have a lot of money here at Lompoc, we try to get nice things for the kids, we’re putting new batting cages up over here and trying to get some new baseballs, a new pitching machine for them, give them a place to hit”, Aguilar said, “this was just another resource they were going to be able to use and we hadn’t even got to use it yet, we were going to use it actually today, it was first time we were going to bring it out and it’s unfortunate what happened.”

News of the stolen baseball equipment spread quickly among Lompoc High School boosters in the community.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of people in the community rallying around this”, said LHS baseball booster and alumnus Wink Whelan, “I just seems really sad that someone would do something like this in the middle of baseball season even.”

Despite the theft of its new equipment, the Lompoc Braves varsity baseball team plans to focus on finishing the season on a high note.

“Our goal is not only to make the playoffs but to win the league title and play for a CIF Championship”, Aguilar said.

Money used to pay for the new baseball equipment came from fundraisers the Lompoc High baseball team and other sports teams at the high school hold in the community throughout the year.
