Body discovered near seal rookery in Carpinteria identified

UPDATE

Authorities have identified the body of a woman discovered near the seal rookery in Carpinteria on March 27 as Anita Rebecca Ruiz, 37, of Santa Barbara.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. However, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office says Ruiz died as a result of her injuries after falling from the cliff. No foul play is suspected.

An official cause and manner of death are pending toxicology and lab results.

Ruiz was visiting family in Carpinteria, according to the Sheriff’s Office, and was last seen on Monday evening, March 26.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of a body Tuesday morning in Carpinteria.

Authorities say a passerby reported seeing the body on the beach east of the seal rookery at 10:15 a.m. The body belonged to a woman whom police have identified but are not releasing her identity until the victim’s family has been notified.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
