Decorative Contact Lenses could pose a health risk

Santa Barbara Public Health officer Charity Dean said trick or treaters should think twice about wearing decorative contact lenses.

“Contact lenses just for decoration to change eye color for example can scratch the eye, can cause eye ulcers and can cause very serious eye infections, someone should really consider very carefully if they need to where decorative contact lenses for their costume, is it really worth there risk,” said Dr. Dean.

Dean said the California Department of Public Health issued a warning before Halloween.

The warning said decorative lenses should not be sold without a prescription.

Parents and kids have seen them for sale at retail stores.

Consumers can report illegal activity to the CDHP’s Food and Drug Branch Hotline at (800)495-3232.
