Dia de los Muertos festival underway in Carpinteria
Artists showed off their work on the first day of a Dia De Los Muertos festival in Carpinteria.
Emiliano Campobello talked about the meaning of the celebration as he worked on a mural at the Carpinteria Arts Center on Saturday.
“Dia de Los Muertos is not a Mexican Halloween, ” said Campobello.
The muralist said it is a time to honor ancestors and recognize that death is a part of life.
“We celebrate death as something that is with us, and as we can be more embracing of that it helps us to be more appreciative of life everyday, and cherish all the beautiful blessings that we have and not take them for granted. So we put out bowls of our ancestors favorite food like grandma’s favorite dessert, for instance, and we invite them in and recognize their spirits are always with us,” said Campobello.
The festival continues with a a parade at 4 p.m. on Linden Ave. on Sunday, Oct. 29.
