Local firefighters among those remembered at annual ceremony in Sacramento
The California Firefighters Memorial Ceremony held in Sacramento on Saturday honored 31 California firefighters who died in the line of duty.
Their names will be added to more than 1,300 inscribed on a limestone wall of the California Firefighters Memorial in Sacramento’s Capitol Park.
The ceremony featured the ringing of the “Last Alarm” and tributes from firefighters.
Ventura County Fire Department Firefighter-Paramedic David Clark offered a remembrance of his friend Ryan Osler.
The Moorpark fire engineer was a passenger in a fatal water tender truck crash last September.
It happened at a roundabout near Purismo Road on a foggy morning as he and a fellow firefighter headed to the Canyon Fire in Santa Barbara County.
“No amount of training can prepare you for this kind of loss,” said Clark. “As firefighters, we come together as brothers and sisters, reaching out to those who have lost your loved one. You are a part of our family, and your loved ones are in our hearts, and the stories we tell. We will never forget them.”
A flag was given to Osler’s family.
Retired Santa Barbara City fire captain Mike Moses was also honored on Saturday.
Moses died last December after a long battle with cancer that is believed to have been job-related.
Moses spent 27 years with the department, ultimately having to retire once diagnosed.
