Elings Park BMX track open for summer campers

BMX riders are back at it with summer campers racing the track at Elings Park in Santa Barbara.

The week-long summer camps run through August 18.

Lompoc resident and BMX organizer James Collins is spearheading a special BMX leukemia/lymphoma fundraiser Sunday. The group’s Facebook page states that at least half of the proceeds raised during the upcoming Race for Life will go toward cancer fighting efforts.

Collins said Sunday’s event is open to local bike riders and they do not to have be a BMX member.

Local riders say they’re happy to have the popular track back open after a nearly 8-month long closure.

“It was a bummer,” Gavin Victor said. “I got into mountain biking so at least I had a little bit of time on the bike but not while it was closed. We have tracks in Santa Maria and Camarillo so, it was possible. It’s always nice to have your track up and running.”

Parents of the local riders tell NewsChannel 3 that a tremendous amount of work and volunteer hours went into bringing the popular sporting event back to Santa Barbara after losing the track managers who once ran the USABMX. A group of parent volunteers now run the USABMX sanctioned track.

Sunday’s fundraising event, July 2, starts at 10:00 a.m. at the BMX track at Elings Park; racing starts at 12:30 p.m.
