Police say baby suffered major injuries in DUI crash

A car slammed into a wall, leaving a 6-month-old and a 21-year-old male passenger with major injuries in Santa Paula Tuesday evening.

According to Ventura California Highway Patrol, the crash happened at about 5:50 p.m. on State Route 150 in Santa Paula. The driver of a car traveling eastbound drove off the roadway for unknown reasons and collided with a block wall and fences of homes located to the north of Highway 150, west of Mupu Elementary School.

The driver of the car was identified as Helen Salazar, 28, of Santa Paula. Inside of the vehicle were five passengers: a 5-year-old, 3-year-old, and 6-month-old, along with two other adult passengers. CHP reported the 6-month-old and the 21-year-old suffered major injuries and were taken to Ventura County Medical Center.

The other three passengers suffered minor and moderate injuries and were taken to local hospitals, according to CHP.

Salazar suffered just minor injuries and was arrested for felony driving under the influence of alcohol. A booking photo is unavailable at this time. CHP also said it appeared two of the children were not wearing seat belts.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Ventura Area CHP office at 805-662-2640.
