Big rig crash near Summerland snarls morning commute

A Monday morning crash on northbound U.S. Highway 101 near Summerland involving a Big Brand Tires semitrailer brought traffic down to one lane.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash but at this time it appears no one other than the big rig was involved.

The collision occurred just before 7:30 a.m. For unknown reasons, the driver of the semitrailer lost control of the vehicle and crashed into an overpass barrier before coming to rest at the Gore point on the Sheffield Road on ramp, according to CHP.

The crash snarled the morning commute. Two of three northbound freeway lanes will remain closed until crews remove the big rig and debris off the roadway.

We will update this story when new information becomes available.
