Olympic hopeful recovering from bicycle collision with a trash truck

An Olympic track hopeful was seriously injured in a Santa Barbara cycling accident on Monday morning.

It happened on a curve along the 900 block of West Mountain Drive.

Brandon Birdsong was riding his bike on the 900 block on W. Mountain Dr. when he collided with a Marborg trash truck.

Brittni Hutton said she got a call from the hospital saying her fiance had been in an accident.

She rushed to his bedside and was relieved to see that his brain was not hurt.

But she said he has a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a lacerated liver and more than a dozen fractures on his right side

They met in an Olympic development group and are now members of Mammoth Track and sponsored by rabbit.

Hutton said he was riding his bycycle rather than running that morning due to an ankle injury.

They are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and hope donations made to a Go Fund Me site will help him pay his medical bills until he can return to work and training.

“He is going to make it to the Olympic trials, he can do it,” said Hutton.
