Rollover rips freeway fence, totals sedan near Montecito

A section of highway fencing was ripped out during a rollover accident that left a sedan mashed and the driver in an ambulance.

CalTrans crews will have to fix about 25 yards of fencing between the northbound lanes of Highway 101 north of Olive Mill and Coast Village Circle nearby.

The crash occurred Saturday morning and sent a dark colored sedan rolling over onto its top. The driver was able to get out. Witnesses saw a small fire or spark during the accident on a crowded two lane section of the freeway. An AMR ambulance transported the driver, but no major injuries were reported.

Responders included the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, The Montecito Fire Protection District, the California Highway Patrol, and AMR.

The traffic was backed up for more than an hour because a lane was closed for the vehicle to be rolled back over, and a fuel leak had to be cleaned up with special absorbent materials.

The roadway was wet at the time from a passing storm.
