Kayakers rescued at Campus Point near Isla Vista

Two kayakers were rescued from the waters off of Campus Point near Isla Vista Sunday afternoon.

Santa Barbara County Fire responded to the call at about 3:00 p.m.

A man and a woman in their early 20’s were caught in big waves and high winds and were pushed out over a mile into the water near an oil platform.

Fire personnel was in contact with the couple during the ordeal. Both kayakers complained of possible hypothermia.

A Santa Barbara County Helicopter out of Santa Ynez spotted the stranded kayakers.

Fire crews rode out on jet skis to the kayakers and towed them back to shore. Due to the rough waters, the rescue took over an hour.

The man and the woman were medically evaluated and then transported to Goleta Valley Medical Center. They are expected to be okay.

Immediately after the kayak rescue, Santa Barbara County Fire responded to two distressed paddle boarders one mile out in between Goleta Beach and Campus Point.

Water rescue personnel responded towed the paddle boarders to shore and they were treated on the scene.

Santa Barbara County Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni said that these types of ocean rescues are not uncommon and warned about inexperienced people venturing into conditions for which they are not prepared.
