Four people safe after firefighters put out laundry room explosion

Three small children and their nanny are safe after firefighters put out flames inside a home on the 500 block of El Sueno Road in Santa Barbara.

City and county firefighters responded to a report of an “explosion” inside a small laundry room inside a single family residence before 11:00 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw small flames and smoke inside the house. They were able to to contain the fire inside the laundry room, however smoke did travel through the house.

Santa Barbara County Fire engineer Sky Bonillo tells Reporter Vicky Nguyen the fire was put out within 10 minutes of the crew’s arrival.

“At the time of the event, there were 3 small children along with a babysitter inside the structure. They fortunately were able to get out of the home in time escaping any type of injury. They stayed out the entire time, called 911 and allowed us to get in and do our job,” said Bonillo.

Firefighters cancelled their request for the Red Cross after the children and nanny found a place to stay nearby.

Investigators are looking into what caused the fire.
