Oxnard native heads to the 2nd round of The Voice

Oxnard native Julien Martinez is the newest contestant in the singing competition known as “The Voice,” and he only started singing five years ago.

“I actually didn’t know I could sing for the longest time,” said Martinez. “When I was a freshman at Oxnard high school the Drama teacher asked me to come in and audition for a play. I never sang in front of anyone before and I didn’t even have a song prepared and they just said sing Happy Birthday.”

Just like that a performer was born.
This past summer Julien decided to audition for “The Voice” for the second time.

“Even though I was sweating bullets I still felt like you know what this time is going to be different,” said Martinez.

And it was. Julien only needed one chair to turn to make it to the next round and he got two.

“For a moment when I was up there I was like even if they don’t turn around I just need to rock out and just give it my all,” said Martinez.

Eventually Julien decided Team Adams was the best fit for him.

“For some reason me an Adam just have that click,” said Martinez. “We both have ADD. Actually he has ADHD and I have ADD and I felt like because of that we can definitely work better together.”

Julien will begin the 2nd round known as “The Battle Rounds” on Monday.
