Dental non-profit looks for help after massive Goleta fire and losses
A February 19th building fire in Goleta, destroyed several business units including one for a 14 year non profit organization has been providing dental care for the people of Afghanistan.
Supplies, machines and tools were ruined by the fire that began during a Sunday night rain storm. The cause has not been determined. Firefighters have said nothing in the investigation shows it was intentional.
Dr. James Rolfe is the founder of the Afghanistan Dental Relief Project.
Years ago he designed special dental units that are inside large containers that are transported to Afghanistan, opened and in short order are ready for patients.
Rolfe says he has been able to go through some items from the fire that were brought out by firefighters, but there’s been no other access into his unit that still has boarded up windows and yellow tape out front.
The items lost that were donated or purchased through financial help amounted to about $200, 000 worth of equipment. Rolfe said the unit was not insured.
He is looking for help from the public to keep the program going and to help the operation on the ground now in Afghanistan.
