Thousands raised for family of father and son killed in Port Hueneme fire

The Ventura County community is coming together to raise money for the family of the father and son killed in an apartment fire in Port Hueneme last week.

Mario Rangel and his 5-year-old son Diego died in the fire that engulfed an apartment building near the area of B Street and Second Street.

Witnesses said Rangel attempted to save his son from the fire before being overtaken by the flames.

A vigil dedicated to the young father and son was held Friday night in Oxnard and a service was held at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church early Saturday morning.

Two GoFundMe pages have been set up to help the family pay for funeral expenses. The two funds have raised over $17,000 for the family.
