San Marcos never trails as they earn a trip to D1 water polo finals

San Marcos makes it at least one step further than last year as the Royals hung on to beat Mater Dei 11-9 and advanced to Satruday’s CIF D1 girls water polo final.

Paige Hauschild, Brittany Prentice and Lili Akin all scored three goals apiece for the Royals.

San Marcos led 4-2 after one quarter, 9-5 at the half, and 11-7 after three quarters.

The Royals, who lost in last year’s semifinal, will now try and do what no team has been able to accomplish this year, beat Laguna Beach.

The Breakers defeated Dos Pueblos 14-4 in the other semifinal to improve to 30-0 on the year.

They are 2-0 so far against San Marcos.

The Royals are making their first trip to the finals since 1999.

Saturday’s game will be in Irvine and likely be at night.
