Fire hydrant eruption drenching Goleta streets

A fire hydrant was sheared off causing water to shoot straight up into the air at Camino Real Marketplace.

It happened before 9:00 a.m. Thursday in Goleta. The hydrant is a private hydrant owned by Costco. Goleta Water District officials on scene said no damage was reported to Costco or surrounding property.

Goleta Water District personnel assisted Costco in shutting down the valve, and say a semi-truck hit the hydrant as it was making a delivery.

It’s estimated that approximately 75,000 gallons of water were lost in this incident.

The spilled water took several hours to clean up. Costco will pay for all cleanup costs.
