Evacuation Warning issued for Sherpa Fire area
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office issued an Evacuation Warning for the Sherpa Fire burn area on Friday due to the storms this weekend.
The areas under Evacuation Warning include: El Capitan Canyon, El Capitan Ranch, El Capitan State Beach, Refugio State Beach, Refugio Canyon, Canada, Venadito Canyon, Del Coral, and Las Flores Canyon.
The warning is in place beginning Friday at 8 a.m. It’s unknown when the warning will be lifted.
All roads in the area of the Evacuation Warning are closed to general traffic. Only emergency vehicles will be allowed through.
An Evacuation Warning means there is a strong likelihood that there will be a risk to life and property, “and residents in the warning area should take this time to prepare to leave quickly if given a mandatory evacuation order,” says a press release issued by the County of Santa Barbara. “Time should be taken to gather family members, pets, valuables, and important paperwork/documents. An individual or family should be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. However, if anyone feels threatened, do not wait for an evacuation order – leave immediately.”

The County of Santa Barbara encourages residents not to walk through flooded waters because it only takes six inches of moving water to knock anyone of their feet. Anyone trapped by moving water should move to the highest possible point and call 911.
The county also reminds the public not to drive into flooded roadways or around barricades because the water may be deeper that it appears and can hide many hazards. Play it safe! 12 inches of water can float a car or small SUV and 18 inches of water can carry away larger cars.
