And the Maltin Modern Master Award goes to… Denzel Washington
Fans calling out lines from Denzel Washington films got the movie star’s full attention outside the Arlington Theatre on Thursday night.
Washington spoke to fans before receiving the Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Film critic Leonard Maltin arrived with his daughter to moderate his namesake event.
They talked about all his films including Fences, the Pulitzer Prize winning drama by the late August Wilson.
Washington produced, directed and stars as Troy in the film that he said strikes a nerve with all kinds of people.
Saniyya Sidney, 10, who plays Troy’s daughter, surprised Washington at the award ceremony.
Stephen Henderson, who plays Troy’s best friend, was also on hand.
Henderson will be honored with a Virtuoso award on Saturday.
Fences has four Academy Award nominations.
Washington has two Oscars and could win two more.
