UCSB legend Phil Womble passes away at the age of 80

Phil Womble, the biggest Gaucho sports fan of all-time passed away early Monday morning at the age of 80.

Womble beat the odds his entire life after being born with cerebral palsy. He easily outlived his projected life span.

For close to 50 years, Womble was a fixture at UCSB sporting events but his love was baseball.

This past June UCSB Baseball fulfilled a dream of Phil’s as they advanced to their first ever College Baseball World Series in Omaha.

Womble was beloved in the Santa Barbara community and he is a member of several hall of fames including UCSB and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table.

This past September, UCSB threw Womble a big 80th birthday party on campus.

His signature phrase “Go Gauchos” is constantly repeated by coaches, athletes and fans.

A memorial service has yet to be announced.
