Minor coastal flooding in Ventura

While the overnight storm going into Wednesday is behind us another is on the way.

Wednesday’s early morning storm created some flooding in low lying coastal areas. At the Ventura Pier parking lot a section of it was completely under water with some spots more than 18-inches deep.

It is not just the rain water flooding low lying coastal areas, it is also the high surf.

“It is just a lot more agitated because normally it looks like a lake but today it looks like a real ocean,” said Ventura resident, Mike Conklin.

“I live in Santa Clarita so I made the drive over. I like watching just the power of the waves and how they smack things around,” said Bill Minter of Santa Clarita.

During the highest tides from eight to nine Wednesday morning. The big waves were not only cashing on the beach but they were even reaching to the top of the seaside staircases.

“It is a lot higher than normal. They usually come up this way so if you are walking around here you have to watch,” said Conklin.

While this wild weather is entertaining to watch it can also be damaging, causing beach erosion and taking out pilings at local piers.

“I think about a year ago the pier was damaged, and I actually walked out on it before they closed it down and it was pretty exciting, it was scary,” said Tody Colitti of Ventra.

The Winter storms have already taken out much of the sand that lines the beaches around the Ventura Pier. By midday the highest tides had come and gone and it looks like the Ventura pier was holding up well.
