As we know when it rains the ground gets nice and saturated and sometimes these trees come crashing down – well that’s exactly what happened here on the Central Coast. Earlier today KCOY 12 Central Coast News tagged along with a tree cutting service to see what they were up against.
The Paulsen family has had a few close calls over the past couple days.
“I was in the house, my wife was in the kitchen and they were all kind of looking outside and then all of a sudden I heard someone yell ‘it’s going down’ and so everyone ran for the hallway,” Arroyo Grande resident Aaron Paulsen said.
It wasn’t just that tree, another one came crashing down overnight Monday.
“It was pretty scary initially, afterwards it was a novelty thing but it was scary at first,” Paulsen said. “It’s good to have the rain but the effects of it is what’s happening here.”
Central City Tree Service was there bright and early to clear the downed trees.
“They never get trimmed, so they get heavy,” Mark Rodriguez, owner of Central City Tree Service said.
Mark Rodriguez says although these Cypress trees are meant to provide privacy, if you don’t maintain them, this is what happens.
“Well we’re chipping, we’ve got a truck and chipper, so we’re chipping all the brush,” Rodriguez said.
They also decided to remove a tree.
“Because it looks like it’s going to uproot pretty quick, if we get one more rain, we’re pretty sure it’s going to go also,” Rodriguez said.
“I wish I would’ve called Mark a couple of years ago and taken care of this preventative work and this might not have happened,” Paulsen said.
Central City Tree Service recommends preventative work like side trimming and thinning your trees.
