Victim in Morro Bay homicide identified, relative arrested

Morro Bay police have identified 23-year-old William Joel Schonberger of Morro Bay as the suspect arrested in connection with the homicide of a 59-year-old man Friday morning.
Investigators say a large blade-style weapon was used in the murder.
The victim was identified as Morro Bay resident William John Schonberger, 59.

Police are investigating a homicide in the 400 block of Napa Avenue in the city of Morro Bay Friday morning.
Although the identity of the victim has not been released, police describe the victim as a 59-year-old white male. They say the victim and suspect may be related to each other.
A 23-year-old male suspect has been detained and is in police custody. Authorities say a weapon possibly used in the crime was recovered.
While it’s still early in the investigation, police say the suspect acted alone. Investigators say Morro Bay police was notified by the California Highway Patrol of the homicide just after 6 a.m. after coming into contact with the 23-year-old suspect in the Avila Beach area.
The suspect allegedly told CHP officers he had injured a relative in Morro Bay. CHP detained the man and turned him over to Morro Bay police.
Authorities are not releasing any further information about this homicide citing an ongoing investigation.
