Santa Maria Rotaract Club brings holiday cheer

They are answering the call of civic duty at a time of year when the need is great, young professionals coming together in Santa Maria to do what they believe is the right thing for their community.

Their organization is called Rotaract, an offshoot of the Rotary Club, and they are looking for other like-minded young professionals to join their ranks.

They are Santa’s helpers coming together in Santa Maria for a good cause, wrapping up holiday gifts to bring Christmas cheer to a family in need.

“Its a family of five”, says Rotaract Club member Alex Magana, “we as a club bought all the items that were on their wish list and so we donated them out of our own pocket to give back to the needy family.”

The new Santa Maria Rotaract Club is doing its part as part of the Child Abuse Listening Mediation, or CALM, Adopt-a-Family program.

“To make sure we’re getting into the spirit right”, says Rotaract member Jose Zepeda, “its the holiday season, a time of giving, a lot of it really comes from the inside, its something that I think that its always a good thing to do, its always good to give back, especially if you could, because there’s always families in need.”

CALM has received hundreds of wish lists from struggling families across Santa Barbara County.

“It really is an opportunity for us to give back as a group”, Magana says, “we find that its better to do it as a group than to do it alone, that’s what we do, we reach out to our non-profits here in town and as professionals we want to give back to the community and incorporate that into our lives and careers, that’s why we do this, we try to give back whichever way we can, we do that by our time and efforts.”
