Santa Maria man arrested for attempted murder, accused of running over woman’s head

Santa Maria police have arrested 26-year-old man Caleb Lawson, accused of trying to kill his girlfriend Saturday afternoon.

It happened on Colebrook Drive Saturday afternoon.

Police say a man shoved a woman out of a car and then ran over her head. Police saying she’s lucky to be alive. Neighbors are shocked to hear what happened on their normally quiet street.

“Best thing to do is walk away instead of getting involved in domestic violence, domestic violence doesn’t have good outcomes in the end when they become abusive,” neighbor Andy Garcia said.

“While it was a small sedan, still that’s several thousand pounds, especially to have somebody’s head hit by a wheel, that usually causes significant damage if not death,” Santa Maria Police Sgt. Russell Mengel said.

Santa Maria Police Sgt. Russell Mengel says they’d like to see domestic violence eliminated in the city.

“When you have a dispute with someone, where at some point in the relationship you had a love for, let’s figure out different way to work out the differences, get out of the car, go for a walk, give it a few moments to calm down and re-address the situation,” Mengel said.

We spoke with friends of the victim earlier today. They didn’t want to talk on camera but said she has been released from the hospital and is recovering.

I hope she gets a speedy recovery and everything goes well for her in the future and she makes better choices,” Garcia said.

And as for Lawson.

“I hope he gets rehabilitated and he makes better choices and wiser choices and does things better for his life and others,” Garcia said.

Lawson’s been charged with attempted murder. If convicted, he could face life in prison. His bond is set at $500,000.
