Cabrillo basketball standouts honored at No. SB Co. Athletic Round Table
Cabrillo High School swept top honors Monday at the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table.
Held as usual at Giavanni’s Pizza in Orcutt, the weekly luncheon was held for the first time since Nov. 21.
After a two-week break for Thanksgiving and the transition out of the fall sports season, Monday’s meeting marked the first for the winter sports season.
Named the male athlete of the week was Leandrew Knight of Cabrillo basketball. The junior point guard shined during the Nordhoff Tournament, which concluded on Saturday.
Over the course of the four-game tournament, Knight averaged 27 points to help lead the Conquistadores to a 3-1 record.
“It means a lot because I’ve really been getting into the gym everyday, school and gym everyday. Coach has been pushing me hard to lead this team and go get wins for us,” said Knight.
Cabrillo will be off this week and is scheduled start Los Padres League action next Tuesday at Santa Maria. The Conquistadores are aiming for the team’s sixth consecutive league championship.
Knight notes the team is primed for another big season and enters league play with championship aspirations.
“We want to win league for a sixth time, and not just that, we want to go farther in the CIF because the last two years, we got knocked out in the second round and I feel like with this year’s team we can go farther and maybe get to the finals and maybe win it,” Knight said.
The female athlete of the week award was given to another Cabrillo basketball standout, Erin Jenkins, who was not in attendance.
The junior forward helped lead the Conqs to three wins at the Lompoc Tournament. Displaying an all-around game that helped her win last year’s Los Padres League co-Most Valuable Player award, Jenkins racked up 46 points, 21 rebounds, 14 steals, 9 assists and 6 blocks in the three victories.
For the season, Jenkins is averaging 15.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 4.7 steals and 2.0 blocks per game. She leads the team in every single one of those categories.
Cabrillo returns to action Wednesday at the Gold Coast Tournament in Santa Barbara.
The Round Table also recognized Vanessa Cruz of Santa Maria as last week’s athlete of the week. No male athlete was named for last week.
