64th Annual Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade takes over State Street
One of Santa Barbara’s oldest traditions continued with the 64th Annual Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade.
The parade’s theme is “Holiday Under the Sea.” Not only were there big crowds, there were also many entries. Organizers expected more than 50 thousand people watching the parade on State Street between Sola and Cota Street.
“It’s a great way to get the community together and get into the Christmas spirit,” said Lily Marzicola, a Santa Barbara High School student.
Highly decorated United States Marine Corps’ Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, known as “Darkhose,” started the procession. They are one of the most highly decorated squadrons.
The grand marshals were Cody and Caleb Walker. They are the brothers of the late actor and former Santa Barbara resident, Paul Walker. Paul passed away in a car accident three years ago. Since then, his brothers has helped out with charity groups that their brother created and was part of.
“I went to Santa Barbara City College and then UC Santa Barbara. I lived on the Mesa and I just love being back here. It’s an honor being part of the parade,” said Cody Walker.
“Paul was a big part of Santa Barbara. He wouldn’t have lived anywhere else. Myself and Cody also went to school here so it’s a great honor to come back,” said Caleb Walker.
