Four Montecito churches combine efforts for turkey and food drive

Four Montecito churches have combined their efforts to help those in need for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

The results were announced this morning by organizer Marty Bell at the altar during a mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Bell had promised to wear a turkey suit if the churches could get at least 500 turkeys.

He appeared this morning in the costume – a sign the goal had been reached.

Actually, it was exceeded tremendously.

Bell announced between the four churches they had been able to provide 847 turkeys, 288 chickens and over $3000 in cash donations (for other food purchases.) Catholic Charities and the Food Bank of Santa Barbara County will be distributing the donations.

His speech to thank those involved was emotional, because of the overwhelming generosity. “You have truely humbled me,” said Bell. “To be able to see in each and every one of your hearts and to witness the loving generosity that lies within.”

Bell said on Thanksgiving day 3000 people will be enjoying a meal because, “you cared enough for them!”

Last Sunday Bell was collecting the frozen birds, and sacrificed a toe to an injury when he dropped a 12 pound turkey on his foot.

The participating churches were: Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, All Saints by the Sea Episcopal, El Montecito Presbyterian, and Montecito Covenant Church.
