Fuel spill contained at Naval Base Ventura County

A fuel spill at Naval Base Ventura County caused early morning evacuations. The spill originated from a 7,400 gallon tanker. Officials said 1,550 gallons of fuel spilled.

The spill was contained just before 1 p.m. and the Las Posas gate will be closed until further notice. Military traffic will be diverted to other gates.

The spill happened around 5:20 a.m. Friday morning. The cause of the spill is unknown according to the Ventura County Naval Base Public Affairs Officer Theresa Miller.

The air station south of Port Hueneme and west of the Pacific Coast Highway had several agencies respond to the spill including: Ventura County Fire, Federal Fire Ventura County, Oxnard Fire, and The California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Media and those not in the military will not have base access.

Early morning evacuations have been lifted.
